About Birmingham Rathbone

Birmingham Rathbone Society is a registered charity (no. 516557) which supports adults with a learning disability/difficulty or autism in Birmingham to enable them to achieve their full potential.

We provide support for adults with learning disabilities/difficulties or autism to live as independently as possible in their own homes and in the community. This can include support to secure and maintain safe accommodation, access health services, manage finances, access training, education, volunteering and employment opportunities, and a range of leisure, social, cultural, religious and community activities.

Birmingham Rathbone is a high quality service provider assessed as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission in their most recent review of our care services, and Excellent by the City Council in their most recent review of our support service.


Birmingham Rathbone (formerly called Birmingham Elfrida Rathbone Society) was incorporated and registered as a charity in 1985.


The Society was named after the Suffragette and social reformer Elfrida Rathbone, who was born in 1871 and campaigned for better treatment of children with learning disabilities, founding an Occupational Centre and various kindergarten in London in 1919.


Birmingham Rathbone has embraced Elfrida’s philosophy that with support people with learning disabilities/difficulties can successfully live independently within the community and have freedom of choice over their own lives.
